As advancements in orthodontics continue to emerge, more patients are seeking out the latest technologies to enhance their treatment experience. One of the newest innovations is LightForce braces, a 3D-printed, fully customized bracket system that offers many benefits over traditional metal braces. But if LightForce is so advanced, why isn’t every orthodontist offering it?

1. Newer Technology, Not Yet Standard

LightForce braces are relatively new to the orthodontic market. Launched in 2018, this innovative system is still gaining traction within the industry. Many orthodontists who have been practicing for decades are familiar with traditional braces and Invisalign and may be slower to adopt new technologies that require updated training and equipment.

As with any new orthodontic innovation, it takes time for all professionals to incorporate these advancements into their practices. Orthodontists who prioritize staying on the cutting edge of dental technology, like our team at Walt Orthodontics, are quicker to introduce treatments like LightForce, but many clinics prefer to wait until a new product becomes more widespread.

2. Specialized Training and Equipment

Implementing LightForce braces requires specialized training and advanced technology. Orthodontists need to be well-versed in the 3D-printing technology and digital treatment planning that makes LightForce braces so unique.

The learning curve for this new system can be a significant barrier for some orthodontists. Not only does it require a thorough understanding of the digital tools involved, but practices also need to invest in the hardware and software required to create and manage LightForce braces. For smaller or more traditional practices, this investment in time and money may not yet seem worthwhile, especially if their patients are satisfied with conventional treatment options like metal or ceramic braces.

At Walt Orthodontics, our commitment to offering state-of-the-art treatment means we’ve made this investment to bring the latest advancements to our patients. Because our office is 100% digital and custom – which means every orthodontic appliance we use on our patients is specifically made for them, offering LightForce braces was a logical option. Dr. Walt and Grossman are very experienced treatment planning orthodontic treatment on a computer.

3. Patient Demand Varies by Region

In some areas, patient demand for LightForce braces may not be as high as in others. Orthodontic treatments are highly personalized, and many patients, especially in smaller or more rural communities, may still prefer traditional braces due to their familiarity and affordability.

In contrast, at our Vaughan-based practice, we’ve found that our patients are increasingly seeking out cutting-edge orthodontic treatments that offer greater personalization and shorter treatment times. For this reason, we’ve integrated LightForce into our offerings to meet the needs and preferences of our local community.

4. Cost Considerations

While LightForce braces offer numerous benefits—such as a personalized fit, faster treatment times, and fewer office visits—the cost of implementing this technology can be higher than that of traditional braces. For practices and patients alike, these cost considerations play a significant role in the decision to use LightForce.

From the orthodontist’s perspective, offering LightForce requires investment in new technology and training, which may lead to higher operational costs. Some practices may not feel it’s financially viable to incorporate this system into their treatment plans, particularly if the majority of their patients opt for more affordable traditional braces.

For patients, although LightForce braces provide significant advantages, the higher cost may deter some individuals from choosing them, especially if their dental insurance doesn’t cover the difference. At Walt Orthodontics, we’re transparent about the cost of all of our treatments and offer flexible financing options to help make treatments like LightForce more accessible. Although LightForce braces are way more sophisticated than traditional metal braces, they are not more expensive in our office.

5. Comfort with Established Methods

Many orthodontists have been using traditional braces for decades and have honed their skills using these systems. Traditional metal braces are a reliable and effective solution for a wide variety of orthodontic issues, and some practitioners may feel there’s no need to adopt new technology when they’ve seen great success with the tools they’ve been using for years.

However, at Walt Orthodontics, we recognize the potential of new technology to provide even better results and patient experiences.

Conclusion

The reason every orthodontist doesn’t offer LightForce braces boils down to factors like the newness of the technology, the investment in specialized equipment and training, patient demand, and cost considerations. While traditional braces remain a trusted and effective solution, we believe that innovations like LightForce braces offer our patients a more personalized, efficient, and comfortable treatment experience.
