One question we are often asked is, does having braces cause any pain? The simple answer is: Braces can cause some initial discomfort – but it is manageable and doesn’t last very long!

Getting Your Braces Put On

When your braces are placed onto your teeth, you shouldn’t feel any pain. The appointment for placement takes about 45 to 90 minutes.

After your braces are placed, our team at Walt Orthodontics will remind you of the proper maintenance and care involved in your treatment. This includes eating softer foods, especially with minimal chewing for the first few days. Some great ideas include mac and cheese, yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, apple sauce and ice cream. The reason for this is because your teeth will be sore the first few days, it will be difficult to chew foods with normal texture.

A Few Days Later

Once your teeth begin to move, which starts a few hours after your braces go on, you will likely feel some discomfort. However, it is a dull achy pain. Your teeth will feel a little sore but the soreness is exacerbated when you try to eat. This is why we recommend the foods listed above which require minimal chewing and are easy to swallow. Your mouth will take a few days to adjust to the pressure of your braces. This soreness tends to last anywhere from 3-7 days. If you are sore after a week from your initial appointment, please let us know.

Orthodontic Appointments and Adjustments

For the duration of your orthodontic treatment, you’ll need to check in with us for periodic adjustments to your braces. This helps to make sure your smile is progressing and you achieve your goals!

During your check in, we may make some adjustments to your appliance. You may feel some slight discomfort, but it should subside after a few days. The discomfort from routine adjustments is nowhere near the discomfort at the beginning.

In case you’re wondering, discomfort from Invisalign is usually less than braces. A feeling of tightness is usually experienced with each aligner change but it is minimal. That is why we suggest changing aligners at night before bed.

Tips for Discomfort

Use a saltwater rinse to help relieve irritation from any of the braces, archwires, or appliances (such as an expander).

Use over-the-counter pain medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen are recommended during the initial days after braces go on.

Eat soft or cold foods for the first few days to help with relief and soothe any areas where you may feel discomfort.

Use orthodontic wax to keep your braces from rubbing against the inside of your mouth.
