When it comes to orthodontic treatments, many patients are curious about the potential effects on their facial structure. One question we often hear at Walt Orthodontics is, “Does Invisalign change face shape?” The answer is nuanced, and it depends on your unique orthodontic needs and goals. In this blog article, we’ll dive into how Invisalign® works and whether it can have an impact on your face shape.

How Invisalign® Works

Invisalign® is a modern orthodontic solution designed to align teeth using clear, removable aligners. These custom-made trays gradually shift your teeth into their ideal positions without the need for traditional braces. The system is effective for correcting various orthodontic issues, including crooked teeth, gaps, and bite misalignments.

Can Invisalign® Affect Your Face Shape?

The short answer is: no unless combined with jaw surgery. That being said, facial changes may be taking place for other reasons not related to the Invisalign® appliance per se. Let’s explore two scenarios:

1. Extraction of 4 bicuspids

When dental crowding or protrusion is severe, sometimes we recommend removing teeth so we can upright them and make them appear at a more normal angle. In these situations it is possible for the lips to come back slightly. This would be the same effect for braces or Invisalign.

2. Jaw Development in Younger Patients

Natural jaw growth takes place the most for teenagers or younger patients. Orthodontic treatment doesn’t change genetics but can have mild influences. Invisalign®, when combined with the Carriere Appliance, for example, can result in some noticeable changes to facial structure over time.

It’s important to note that these changes are generally subtle and are often viewed as positive enhancements to overall aesthetics. Invisalign® isn’t designed to dramatically alter your face shape – it’s focused on creating a healthier, more aligned smile.

How This Relates to Vaughan Patients

In Vaughan, patients often seek orthodontic treatment not just for dental health but for a confidence boost. Invisalign® offers an excellent solution for improving smiles without the noticeable appearance of traditional braces. Many of our patients appreciate that Invisalign® aligners are nearly invisible, making them a discreet choice for those in professional or social settings.

What Factors Influence the Impact on Face Shape?

Several factors can determine whether Invisalign® will affect your face shape:

  1. Severity of the Orthodontic Issue
Patients with significant bite issues or misalignments may notice more pronounced changes in their facial structure as these problems are corrected.

  2. Duration of Treatment
Longer treatment times may allow for more gradual adjustments that influence facial balance.

  3. Compliance with Treatment
Wearing your aligners as directed is crucial for achieving desired results. Invisalign® requires 20 to 22 hours of daily wear for optimal effectiveness.

The Benefits of Invisalign® Beyond Appearance

While changes to your face shape might be a consideration, the primary benefits of Invisalign® are related to oral health and confidence:

  • Improved Functionality: Correcting bite issues can make chewing and speaking more comfortable.

  • Enhanced Oral Health: Straighter teeth are easier to clean, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

  • Boosted Confidence: A more aligned smile can help you feel more self-assured in personal and professional settings.
