Embarking on the orthodontic journey isn’t just for teenagers – it’s a path that many adults are choosing to take to achieve the smile they’ve always desired. At Walt Orthodontics, we celebrate and support adult patients who have decided to start their orthodontic treatment. In this blog article, we’re delving into the essentials that adult orthodontic patients need to know.

Understanding Adult Orthodontics

Adult orthodontics is on the rise, with the American Association of Orthodontists reporting a significant increase in adult patients. Adults are seeking treatment for various reasons, from cosmetic to functional, and advancements in orthodontics have made it more feasible and less intrusive than ever before.

Why Choose Orthodontics as an Adult?

As an adult, opting for orthodontics can be a life-changing decision. It’s not only about aesthetics but also about improving dental health. Misaligned teeth can be harder to clean, leading to an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay. Proper alignment of your teeth contributes greatly to overall dental health and enhances your smile and self-esteem, as outlined on the AAO’s adult orthodontics page.

Types of Braces for Adults

Today, adults have several orthodontic treatment options that are discreet and efficient. The Cleveland Clinic outlines these options:

  • Traditional Metal Braces: Historically the most common type, which has evolved to be smaller and more comfortable. We no longer offer this type of outdated braces.
  • Ceramic Braces: Less noticeable as they blend with the colour of your teeth. We offer LightForce custom braces which are made from 3d printed ceramic.
  • Lingual Braces: Placed behind the teeth, making them invisible from the front.
  • Clear Aligners: Such as Invisalign, are virtually invisible and removable for eating and brushing.

Considerations for Adult Orthodontics

Adults have different considerations when it comes to orthodontic treatment, such as the presence of previous dental work, slower tissue response, and potential bone loss. Progression of gum recession is also a distinct possibility. WebMD’s overview of adult braces provides more insights into these factors.

The Social Aspect of Adult Braces

Wearing braces as an adult can be a concern, especially in professional settings. However, Healthline suggests that the growing acceptance and normalization of adult orthodontic treatment are making it a non-issue for many.

Maintaining Oral Hygiene with Braces

Maintaining optimal oral hygiene is crucial during orthodontic treatment. The Mayo Clinic offers guidelines on how to brush and floss effectively with braces.

Timeframe and Patience

Adults might find that their treatment duration is slightly longer due to denser bone tissue. Patience is key, and the results are well worth the wait.

Embarking on orthodontic treatment as an adult is a brave and commendable step towards not just a beautiful smile but also a healthier one. At Walt Orthodontics, we’re here to ensure your journey is smooth, efficient, and tailored to your unique needs.
