At Walt Orthodontics, we often come across the intriguing query: What age is not good for braces? Understanding the age equation can be your stepping stone towards making an informed decision. Let’s demystify the age myth and dive into when to take the braces plunge!

The Early Bird Glimpse

It’s often believed that earlier is better when it comes to orthodontic intervention. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7. This early assessment can provide a roadmap for any future orthodontic work. However, this doesn’t mean braces are imminent or necessary at this tender age.

The Teen Terrain

Teenage years are often tagged as the ‘golden period’ for braces. It’s a time when most of the permanent teeth have made their grand entrance, and the jaw is still growing. Addressing orthodontic issues during these formative years can lead to optimal outcomes.

Adulthood: No Expiry Date on Braces Start

Many adults harbour the myth that there’s an expiration date on getting braces. Casting the adult years into the “what age is not good for braces” category. However, it’s a misconception! Adult orthodontics is a growing field, and it’s never too late to pursue a picture-perfect smile.

Maturity Matters

Regardless of age, a certain level of dental and emotional maturity is crucial for the braces journey. Being prepared for the commitment and the maintenance braces require is essential for a successful outcome. Just because a 7 year old may need orthodontic treatment doesn’t mean it can happen if they cannot tolerate sitting in a dental chair.

Individualized Insight is Key

Every smile is unique, and so is the orthodontic journey. An individualized consult is your best compass to navigate the age conundrum regarding braces.

Health: The Silent Player

Oral and overall health play a significant role in determining the right time for orthodontic treatment. A healthy foundation is paramount for a successful braces journey. Most adults we ask that they get their gums and bone levels checked since they are more likely to get gum recession.

The Magic of Modern Orthodontics

Modern orthodontics has blurred the age lines considerably. Innovations like Invisalign have made orthodontic treatment a feasible and appealing option for a broader age spectrum.
